Getting up close with bees
On Saturday 28th September 2019, the SLBKA held a hugely successful beekeeping pop-up cafe at the Portree Community Library. The event aimed to raise awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping in general, as well as in the local context of Skye and Lochalsh. A good number of members was on hand to talk about bees, demonstrate the use of various equipment and to answer all manner of questions presented by the public.
The observation hive was a real hit with all the visitors and children in particular, as was the honey extraction and honey tasting part of the event. The pop-up cafe, laden with home-baked donations and teas and coffees, added to the community feel and complemented well the day’s activities on offer. Judging from the overwhelmingly positive feedback received, the beekeeping pop-up cafe was a worthwhile, educational and informative event enjoyed across all age groups.
Many thanks to all who made this event such a huge success!
Update: The profits from the event were donated to Bees for Development (http://www.beesfordevelopment.org) which promotes sustainable beekeeping to combat poverty and build sustainable, resilient livelihoods.
